IoT Device Certification
Learn about the Deutsche Telekom's device supplier partnerships and our portfolio of certified devices.
Deutsche Telekom certification secures best connectivity & interoperability on hundreds of IoT Devices. As you probably know an IoT device is a little but complex thing with several components that all need to interoperate well in order to build a reliable IoT solution.
In the following picture you see all the components of an IoT device: Microcontroller, sensors, batteries, antenna, GNSS chip and last but not least the radio module (WAN chipset and communication module).
You can imagine you could design and build a nearly endless number of combinations and therefore a nearly endless number of devices with these components from all kinds of manufacturers.
In case of a devkit (like BC66 etc.) the world is less complex: battery, GNSS and sensors and even MCE may not be present.
Still a huge number of models - but the good thing is: there are not so many chipset manufacturers around and only a manageable number of module manufacturers that provide the WAN chipset and communication modules. And what is the important thing to ensure a reliable communication over our cellular networks? Exactly, the WAN-facing components.
As connectivity is the common enabler, Deutsche Telekom invests in chipset and modem certification to ensure:
▪ Interoperability with Networks
▪ Compliance to 3GPP & Telekom Requirements
▪ Security
▪ Device Management
▪ No Harm to Network (as per GSMA TS.34)

IoT Device Certification Landscape
from GSMA.
This document walks the reader through the different types of certification used for an IoT Device, including regulatory approvals, telecoms industry certification and operator-specific tests. The main focus is on the telecoms industry certification from a 3GPP cellular connectivity perspective, where an overview of the certification process of GCF and PTCRB is provided. The document also explains where IoT Devices fit into certification processes originally intended for mobile phones and smartphones. References are made to existing test documentation and test plans where available.
